Location: A591 Thirlmere Lake

A motorcycle was hit by a car on the A591 just north of Thirlmere Lake at around 6pm on the 16th June 2016. One 48 year old female pillion passenger was critically injured she was initially treated by a passing Doctor and Nurse before being joined by Paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service and the North West Air Ambulance along with two BASICS Doctors (one from Caldbeck & Dr Weston from the BEEP Fund, Penrith).
The patient was placed into a medically induced coma as well as receiving other treatments at the scene. The team were also joined by the Doctor and Paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance who started a blood transfusion before flying the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, her condition is still described as critical but is now stable.
The motorbike rider, a 55 year old gentleman, suffered minor injuries. The collision also involved a 28 year old and 32 year old woman and man in a Volkswagen Tiguan who were uninjured in the incident.
Police closed the road for five hours to allow the patient to be treated, and to carry out their investigations.
