Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine Crew Course

GNAAS worked with London's Air Ambulance to develop a course that provided clinicians with both the clinical and non-clinical skills that were required as HEMS clinicians. This course became known as the HEMS Crew Course and was delivered annually.

The course is aimed at both Paramedics looking to expand their current skill set (including the ability to function as HEMS crew) and also at Doctors who are beginning their careers in prehospital care (recommended ST3/4+ in Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine). NOTE: Due to the high level of medical care required as part of the course, we recommend candidates have at least some experience of delivering prehospital anaesthesia (or to have completed the GNAAS prehospital anaesthesia course prior to attending PHEMCC.

Pre-hospital anaesthetic course

This two day course aims to cover the knowledge, skills, and human factors required for pre-hospital care practitioners to perform emergency anaesthesia safely in the pre-hospital environment.

Any doctor, paramedic, or nurse who currently performs or assists with pre-hospital rapid sequence induction (RSI) or wishes to train in this area. The current national guidelines suggest that a minimum level of experience for doctors wishing to train in pre-hospital anaesthesia is equivalent to that of the acute care common stem programme (six months’ emergency medicine, six months’ medicine, and 12 months’ anaesthesia and critical care). The course directors advise medical candidates that they need to be at least specialty training year 3 or above to have the necessary clinical experience for decision making. The course covers indications for pre-hospital anaesthesia and decision making, practicalities of RSI, checklists, post-intubation management, equipment and minimum monitoring standards, drugs and sedation, and what to do when it all goes wrong! It also highlights the clinical governance issues required to safeguard individuals and organisations that provide pre-hospital anaesthesia.
